The difference between home automation and smart homes

Home automation refers to using technology to automate certain tasks or functions within a home. It typically centers around controlling individual devices with one central platform or control panel, such as lights, thermostats, security, and entertainment systems. It is an umbrella term that also encompasses the idea of smart homes, an expansive concept on its own. Home automation enables users to schedule or remotely control specific actions for increased convenience and efficiency.

In a smart home various devices, systems, and appliances are seamlessly interconnected and communicate. The best smart home devices can serve through integration between multiple systems, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT), for seamless interaction among various smart home devices.

The difference between home automation and smart homes

Smart homes and home automation are often confused as synonyms, yet they are distinct concepts. Both can automate specific tasks within the home yet work differently and offer their own set of advantages. Their main difference lies in scope and capabilities; smart home devices transmit/receive data using servers like Amazon,Google or other brands’ own ecosystems such as Xiaomi’s or Tapo’s, while home automation utilizes actuators directly within a house’s electrical system. In other words, while home automation uses the electrical system, smart homes require the internet.

Smart home automation refers to using technology to automate specific tasks or functions within a home, with particular attention given to controlling devices like lights, thermostats, security systems, and entertainment systems through one centralized control platform or control panel. Home automation’s primary objective is to provide convenience and energy efficiency by enabling users to schedule, remotely control, or automate specific actions related to these devices.

Smart homes are an advanced living environment that goes beyond simple device automation to create an ecosystem where various devices, systems, and appliances collaborate seamlessly and work as one unit, typically accompanied with smart features. Smart home products use cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and IoT for seamless connection and automation across various aspects of the home – for instance, sharing information between devices, adapting to user  preferences, and reacting autonomously when conditions change.

Applicable Situations

There are infinite automations you can apply to your home. You can trigger the lights to turn on when you enter the house using a motion sensor. Landscape lighting outside your door can be set to turn on at sunset and turn off at sunrise. You can set the smart lights to dimly light up at night when they detect motion so as not to hurt your eye but be enough to help you find your way around the house, along with many, many other scenarios.

Advantages of Smart Homes vs. Home Automation

Since home automation is an umbrella term, smart homes fall under that umbrella. All advantages of smart homes will be advantages of home automation systems. Smart homes that are equipped with devices from the same company, have the advantage of being more easily controlled with one app, whereas in order to connect devices from different brands, you would need to use Google Assistant or Alexa to do the integrating for you.

Home automation also very much relies on the interconnectedness of the devices, and enjoys much easier control when they are all from the same manufacturer. Hopefully, the aforementioned manufacturer has all the devices you need in their portfolio.(There was no link to this one so I had to screenshot it)
